Review: The A3 Sportback is a highly competent and attractive sports hatch with some very agile engines to choose from. Review (continued): Safety equipment consists of ABS with EBD, Anti Slip Regulation (ASR), Electronic Stability Programme, driver and front passenger front airbags and the Audi Sideguard airbags which cover the front and rear windows. The A3 Sportback comes in the same three trims as the A3 - Standard, Sport and S line. There are five petrol engines and three diesels available. Performance data is very similar to the A3. In the standard version the petrol engines include the 1.4 TFSI, 1.6 and 1.8 TFSI and have combined fuel consumption averages ranging between 48.7mpg and 37.7mpg and CO2 emissions between 138g/km and 171g/km. The optimum is probably the 1.8 TFSI at 38.2 combined mpg, 131g/km CO2 and 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds. The diesel engines in the standard versions include the 1.9 TDI and 2.0 TDI with combined fuel economies ranging between 54.3mpg and 47.9mpg and CO2 emissions between 119g/km and 156g/km. A good choice might be the 2.0 TDI (DPF) 170bhp which averages 48.7mpg, has CO2 emissions of 151g/km and 0-62 in 8.3 seconds. In the Sport and S line versions the 2.0 TFSI petrol engine with 6 speed transmission returns an average of 35.8mpg, CO2 emissions of 189g/km and 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds and the 3.2 quattro 6 speed a combined average pf 26.9mpg, CO2 emissions of 250g/km and 0-62mph in 6.4.
