Review: The reality is that the Mondeo has always been an outstanding large family car but it seemed to suffer from an image problem. Except for some diesel versions indicated below, the performance figures for the Hatchback and Estate are the same. The Mondeo is available in five different trims - Edge, Zetec, ECOnetic, Ghia and Titanium (plus Titanium X and Titanium X Sport). There are four Duratec petrol engines - 1.6 litre (110 PS and 125 PS), 2.0 litre, 2.3 litre and 2.5 litre - and two Duratorq diesel engines - 1.8 TDCi (100 PS and 125 PS) and 2.0 TDCi (130 PS and 140 PS). Combined fuel economies for the petrol versions range between 39.2mpg and 30.4mpg with CO₂ emissions ranging from 172g/km and 223g/km. The diesels once again look like the optimum choice with combined fuel economies ranging between 50.4mpg (49.6mpg Estate) and 39.8mpg (2.0 TDCi Auto) and CO₂ emissions between 149g/km and 189g/km (2.0 TDCi Auto). To highlight one example - the 2.0 TDCi (140 PS) 6 speed manual Hatchback and Estate return a combined average fuel economy of 47.9mpg with CO₂ emissions of 156g/km and gets between 0-62mph in 9.2 seconds (9.6 seconds Estate) and has excellent mid range power.
