Review: Very classy, comfortable and robust, the S-MAX is a pleasure to drive and is reassuringly agile and decisive on the road. Running costs are modest, particularly with the diesel versions and all have very comprehensive safety and security provision. Review (continued): The 2.5i is available on the Zetec and Titanium, has CO2 emissions of 224g/km and an average combined fuel economy of 30.1mpg. The 2.3i is available on all trims, emits 232g/km CO2 and has a combined average fuel economy of 29.1mpg. Of the three Duratorq diesel engines the 1.8 TDCi and 2.0 TDCi are available on all trims and respectively emit 164g/km and 169g/km (194g/km Auto) of CO2 and have combined average fuel economies of 45.6mpg and 44.1mpg (38.7mpg Auto). The 2.2 TDCi is available only in the Titanium version and has CO2 emissions of 176g/km and a combined fuel economy of 42.8mpg. Safety is first class. The S-MAX was awarded five stars for adult occupant protection in the Euro NCAP crash tests and four stars for child protection. It has ESP with EBA, ABS with EBD, driver and front passenger airbags, driver and front passenger front side impact side airbags, curtain airbags covering the front and second row seats (not the third row), driver's kneebag and collapsible pedals and steering wheel.
